The FA is under competitive pressure in its search for Southgate's successor.
Following Southgate's dismissal, Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as the leading candidate being considered by the FA for the new manager. In addition, both Porter and England U21 boss Casley are also favored candidates. However, the USMNT has shown a strong interest in Pochettino. Having just recently fired men's soccer boss Berhalter, the U.S. is currently looking for a head coach who can take the team to the 2026 World Cup.
It is understood that the U.S. Soccer Federation has been scouting Pochettino, but no direct contact has been made. Pochettino is free to choose to coach either England or the United States after leaving Chelsea, but it is understood that if Pochettino coaches a top-six Premier League team within six months of leaving Chelsea, the Blues will receive £5 million in compensation.
Pochettino is open to coaching the national team, having previously expressed interest in coaching England, but has never talked about the possibility of coaching the United States. However, the 2026 World Cup will be held in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, a factor that could be attractive to Pochettino. In addition, the appointment of a Spanish-speaking head coach would be welcomed in the United States.
For now, former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has turned down an offer to join the U.S. team. The U.S. Soccer Federation wants to find a star coach who is used to working with big names and can handle a high-pressure environment.
England, for their part, have not ruled out appointing a foreign coach whom they consider to be "English" to replace Southgate, but sources believe they would prefer to look for an Englishman.
With the increased interest in Pochettino from both football associations, the future of the Argentine manager is in the spotlight. Whichever team he ultimately chooses, Pochettino's coaching experience and ability will have a profound impact on the team's development.
