redundancies
The plans have dealt a serious blow to staff morale and many employees are angry and disappointed. United are due to fly to the United States on Wednesday for a pre-season tour, but the redundancy plan is already in effect, involving 250 jobs.
United staff were told on Tuesday that their positions would be at risk, with some of those who had planned to take part in the U.S. tour being informed at the last minute that they would not be going in a bid to cut costs. United's contingent for the US tour, which includes players and coaches, is around 125, down from the total number on last summer's tour.
In separate meetings, those employees whose positions were at risk were informed of the specifics. The process will accelerate in the coming weeks as redundancies are confirmed. The Mirror reports that the mood around the Manchester United club has become very bleak, with many staff feeling angry and hurt that their years of loyal service have been treated so rudely.
Many employees have pointed out that United's biggest waste over the last decade has been poor player recruitment rather than the hard work of the club's staff. United's net spend on players over the last decade has been £1.1 billion compared to just £200 million for Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants achieving several successes during that time in stark contrast to United.
Manchester United announced last month that they would lay off nearly a quarter of the club's 1,112 staff as part of a drive to cut operating costs. The job cuts are expected to save United around £10 million. Since Ratcliffe took over soccer operations, United director Sir Dave Brailsford has carried out an extensive review of the club, concluding that current staffing levels are too high and that savings could be made around non-essential activities.
For their part, United declined to comment to the Mirror on the proposed layoffs.
