Laporte joined Riyadh Victory last summer, signing a three-year deal with a net annual salary of €24 million. Although Laporte himself showed great interest in joining Real Madrid and was willing to give up the remaining two years of his contract to go to Real Madrid, Riyadh Victory did not intend to release him easily.
At the beginning, Riyadh Victory spent 27 million euros to sign Laporte from Manchester City. To convince them to release him, the buyer would need to pay at least a certain transfer fee. However, Real Madrid only want to sign Laporte on a waiver, which has stalled the current negotiations between the two sides.
Real Madrid are currently short of center backs, but they know that Alaba will return in November. Therefore, Real Madrid may hold off on their pursuit of Laporte if Riyadh Victory are not willing to let him go for free.
Laporte's life in Saudi Arabia was not comfortable and he felt uncomfortable with the living conditions in the Middle East. However, the situation was compounded by the fact that Riyadh Victory demanded a transfer fee not because of a lack of money, but to save face.
