Southampton have announced the signing of Alkmaar Japanese international Suga Kisei on a 4-year contract until 2028. Following in the footsteps of Maya Yoshida and Takumi Minamino, Suga becomes the next generation of Saints' Japanese internationals.

Suga Cause Sensei debuted at Nagoya Whale. He started his European tour in 2019. He first settled in the Netherlands, acclimatizing in the lower divisions. He later joined Alkmaar and played five seasons, playing 165 games and scoring 11 goals, including more than 40 games in each of the last three seasons, and can play as a right lock and right midfielder. Meanwhile, he played 13 games for the Japanese national team, including a goal in a warm-up win over Germany last year.

Southampton were particularly keen to introduce Japanese players. Ma Yoshida had previously worked for eight years, loaning Takumi Minamino to Liverpool. Recently, in addition to signing Sugawara, he has been linked with several new stars, including 17-year-old rookie Ushiro Takaoka, and 21-year-old FC Tokyo midfielder Kusei Matsuki is about to vote.
