Arsenal Football Club officially announced today that 22-year-old Italian defender Carafiore has officially joined the team and with it the Gunners' pre-season training camp in the United States. The news certainly brings new expectations and excitement for Arsenal fans. Manager Mikel Arteta was interviewed by the British media at the home of the Philadelphia Union and commented on Carafiore's joining as well as the team's reinforcement efforts.
Arteta began by expressing his extreme satisfaction and appreciation for the signing of Calafiore. He revealed that in his interactions with Calafiore, the young defender showed great determination and willingness. "I spoke to him once or twice and at that point I didn't know if we could get this done, but it felt fantastic." Arteta said, "He was very determined, he said 'let me know when you are ready, my bags are ready and I just want to come to Arsenal'. He is such a determined player."
Arteta further emphasized that Calafiori's desire and determination to join Arsenal is one of the qualities that the team looks for. "When you have that willingness and determination to make us better, we should be very proud of that." He said.
Regarding Carafiore's placement in the upcoming game, Arteta said he won't rush the newcomer into the game against Liverpool, but there is a chance that Carafiore could get some playing time. "He won't be rushed for the game against Liverpool but he could play a few minutes." Arteta revealed.
In addition, Arteta spoke about Arsenal's reinforcement efforts. He said that the team has identified areas for improvement in their February and March meetings and have been working on strengthening the squad. "We will try to make up the squad if we can. But so far I am very happy with what I have." He said.
Meanwhile, Arteta has also made it clear that Arsenal are not looking to do a heavy deal like bringing in Declan Rice at the moment. "We are not expecting to do any deal like Rice at the moment." He said. This statement may mean that Arsenal will focus more on cost-effectiveness and practicality in terms of reinforcements, rather than simply pursuing big-name stars.
The signing of Karafiori certainly adds new energy and options to Arsenal's backline. As the pre-season training camp progresses and matches approach, fans have reason to expect great things from the young defender at Arsenal.
