act in accordance with
Chelsea
Following reporter Nizaar Kinsella reports that Chelsea midfielder
Enzo
After rejoining the team in Atlanta, GA, has asked several of the team's French players to
apologize in person
and gained their approval, and the matter has thus far been resolved within Chelsea.
Included in the Chelsea contingent for the US tour were a number of French players including Disasi, Badiacil, Ugochukwu, Nkunku, Gusto, Fofana and others. Enzo communicated with these players for an interview and made an apology in person. The players concerned acknowledged Enzo's apology and the matter was considered closed within Chelsea FC.
Enzo has also offered to make a donation to an anti-discrimination charity, which Chelsea will match through the club's foundation. Enzo has finished his vacation and joined the entire Chelsea squad in pre-season training in the United States in preparation for the upcoming season.
Background to the incident:
In the Copa America final, Argentina beat Colombia to win the title. On the team bus after the match, Argentine midfielder Enzo turned on his personal live stream, during which he and a number of Argentine players sang a racist song against the French team. The lyrics involved insulting descriptions of the French players' ethnic backgrounds.
The incident caused an uproar, with many of Chelsea's teammates taking down Enzo on social media, where he later issued a sincere apology. Chelsea made an official announcement that they would not accept any discriminatory behavior and had launched an internal investigation. Now with Enzo's face-to-face apology and the subsequent offer of a charitable donation, Chelsea internally believe the matter has been satisfactorily resolved.
