Caen (French town)
The club has a new owner. French soccer star Kylian Mbappe, through his investment fund Elyon Capital, has acquired 80% of the club's shares previously held by American Oak Capital. The agreement, which was officially signed on Tuesday night local time, will only come into effect once the project has been submitted by the club's Social and Economic Committee (CSE) and the French professional soccer league's (LFP) Department of National Control and Governance (DNCG).
The acquisition is expected to become official in early-mid August. Normally, this would be a normal process, as the accounts of Caen FC, which was targeted for a €5 million capital injection from Oak Capital, passed financial checks a few weeks ago.
Mbappe completed the deal through his family business, Alliance Capital, for an acquisition of approximately €15 million. The current Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Pierre-Antoine Caputon, will retain a stake as a 20% minority shareholder. As founder of Third Eye Productions and chairman of the board of directors of the European audiovisual group Mediawan, Caputon had already paved the way for the exit of the American investment fund Oak Capital this spring. Oak Capital, which joined the Caen club in 2020 when it was going through difficult times, has been looking for a new partner. It was through the impetus of Ziad Hammoud, a former employee of beIN Media Group and now director of Mbappe Image, that the acquisition was able to take shape and be finalized.
