As Manchester City is about to start a friendly match with Barcelona, the team's midfielder, Geraldine Gerrish, attended the pre-match press conference and shared her feelings about not being able to participate in this summer's Europa League as well as her outlook and goals for the new season.
Talking about his Europa League absence, Gralish admits it was one of the biggest challenges he has faced in his career. "From a footballing point of view, not making the Euro roster was definitely the saddest moment for me. I was literally heartbroken at the time and every time I turned on my phone or TV while on vacation, seeing the news about the Europa League made me emotional." He said that although the experience was very tough, he will use it as motivation to try and prove himself in the new season and impress those who have questioned him.
Reflecting on his first two seasons at City, Gralish says he didn't perform at his best in his first season, but it was the experience that made him appreciate every game of his second season even more. "In my first season at City, I really didn't play as well as I should have. But luckily, I got more chances to play in the second season, thanks to my persistence and hard work after the first season." He revealed that his goal then was to return as a stronger player and hopes to do that again in the new season.
On how to get back to his best form, Gralish says confidence is key. "I know it's easier said than done, but I feel at my best when I'm confident and playing regularly. I miss that feeling of being able to play a game every three days and that makes me feel great." He revealed that he is currently actively working on getting back to fitness in a bid to be in top form before the start of the new season. "I have the opportunity to start two weeks earlier which gives me more time to get into shape. I hope to go into the tournament with a lot of confidence and show the best version of myself."
Speaking about the help that manager Pep Guardiola has given him, Gralish was full of gratitude. "Pep is a master of the sport and he always gives me the most valuable advice. He has been very good to me over the last three years and I am very grateful to him." He said he will continue to listen to Guardiola's advice and work hard to achieve his goals in the new season. "I'm not stupid, I know how I can bounce back this season. I believe I am a good player and as soon as I regain my fitness and form I will be able to contribute to the team again."
