After officially joining Chelsea Football Club, new signing Joensen spoke with GivemeSports to share his thoughts on the upcoming competition with Robert Sanchez, the pre-signing exchanges, last season's performance in La Liga, his expectations of the team's style of play, and the journey that led him to choosing Chelsea.
Speaking about the competition with Robert Sanchez, Joensen showed a positive attitude: "Competition is always a good motivation to push us forward. I came here to compete with him and improve together. Of course, the final decision is in the hands of the coach, but I will do my best and try to get better every day. I'm sure it will be a healthy competition and we can all benefit from it and bring better performances to the team." He also highlighted that Robert Sanchez is not only a good goalkeeper but also a very nice person and the two have a great relationship.
Regarding the communication before joining, Joensen revealed, "I had a short conversation with Coach Maresca, who asked me about my recent situation and expressed his desire for me to join Chelsea. I was also very willing to come here, so our conversation went very well." This brief exchange laid a good foundation for Joensen to join.
Reflecting on last season's performance in La Liga, Joensen proudly said, "I finished with 143 saves, which is the most in La Liga. Although we conceded a lot of goals as well, overall it was a good season. I'm happy to have contributed to the team."
On the style of Chelsea's team that will be integrated, Joensen said: "In Spain, we are used to organizing attacks from the back and involving the goalkeeper in the organization of the attack as well. I believe this style will be reflected in Chelsea as well. I already have a good understanding of the coach's tactical intentions, but I still need to adapt through more training and games. I am very much looking forward to understanding and integrating better into the team's style of play."
Finally, Joensen also spoke about his reasons for choosing Chelsea: "When Chelsea offered me the olive branch, I didn't hesitate. Villarreal and my agent knew what I wanted and I was very eager to join Chelsea. There were other Premier League clubs and French clubs that showed interest, but Chelsea's sincerity and determination made the decision final. I am very happy to have taken this step and become part of the Chelsea family. Now, I need to continue working hard to get to know my teammates better and contribute to the team."
