Financial irregularities were avoided by declaring a loss of £40 million due to the epidemic. Soccer finance expert Stefan Bolsen said in an interview that it was only through this special allowance that United could have been prevented from breaching the profit and sustainability rules.
United declared a £40million epidemic loss for the 2021-22 season, an amount far higher than their rivals. Without that cushion, and being allowed to omit the £35million transaction cost of the acquisition of United by the Invesco group, United's losses would have breached the £105million limit over three years, Bolson warned.
Nonetheless, Manchester United are not the only club to have adopted this method to avoid financial irregularities. Owners of the Premier League have admitted that United lost £40 million in the 2021-22 season as a result of the outbreak, but United were still the Premier League's highest-earning club at the time. A number of sponsors failed to make payments or terminated their relationships during the outbreak because they were affected themselves, and the lack of revenue from the 2021 summer tour also had a significant financial impact on United.
In February this year, the Inglis Group agreed a £1.03 billion share purchase deal with the Glazer family. The club said it incurred a cost charge of £35m, but United argued it was not part of the soccer business and could be omitted from the financial review calculations. Chelsea are understood to have taken a similar approach in their 2022 takeover.
