United have a good chance of a coaching change this coming season, with Tannhäuser and his coaching staff leaving the team, but one man who could stay is assistant coach McCallum. Not only was McCallum deputy to 1999 third term winner Ferguson, he also has a rich resume with the Red Devils DNA and a background with new director Basford, so he carries no burden.

According to the Mirror, while Manchester United hired Tannhäuser and his team to coach the team for 22 years, they also called for 63-year-old McCallum to return to the team as an assistant coach. Ostensibly, this is to assist the coach in managing the team, but essentially it is to arrange for the executives around the coach to 'pin' the team, making it easy for the top brass to keep abreast of the team's day-to-day operations.

Coincidentally, McCallum has had friendships in the past with new United shareholder Ratcliffe and former British Cycling leader Basford. With Ratcliffe taking over at United earlier this year and Basford becoming United director, McCullum naturally became a tough backstage player, so even with Tannhäuser's sacking, McCullum had to stay low.
