Valencia sporting director Miguel Corona recently elaborated on Atletico Madrid's failure to complete the transfer of Javi Guerra, revealing the behind-the-scenes reasons why the deal between the two sides fell through.
According to Corona, a high-level agreement had been reached between Valencia and Atletico Madrid over the transfer of Javi Guerra, with both sides actively working on the details since Monday. However, on Wednesday morning, when the Valencia side inquired about the return of the contract, they were surprised to learn that Atletico Madrid were experiencing financial problems and were unable to cover the extra costs associated with the Chelsea deal, which directly led to the collapse of the Guerra transfer.
Corona further explained that the Atletico side had originally asked Guerra to travel to Madrid on Wednesday as they thought they had everything ready. However, the problem came to light at the crucial moment of signing the contract. Corona said that he understood that Atletico's lawyers had failed to comment in time on the contract issue, but that an agreement had been reached and it was only right that it should be put on paper and a contract signed. He emphasized that normally players do not attend training during transfers, which is part of the agreement. For its part, Valencia has even facilitated Guerra's travel to Madrid so that he can complete his transfer.
In response to this sudden turn of events, Corona said that Atletico's CEO, Hil Marin, has personally apologized to him, admitting the mistake of "having an agreement but failing to honor it" and saying that he will also withdraw from the deal. According to Corona, Atletico should be aware of the impact their actions have had on Valencia and Guerra himself.
