The UEFA Champions League, formerly known as the European Champion Clubs' Cup, was founded by UEFA in 1954 and changed to its current name in 1992. 16 teams took part in the inaugural Champions League in the 1955/56 season, and after three rounds of home and away knockout matches, the two winners took part in a one-legged final.
