Places in the Europa League proper are determined through a series of competitions and rankings. First, the host nation automatically qualifies. The remaining teams are then allocated places based on their ranking in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The higher ranked teams will go straight into the main round, while the lower ranked teams will have to play in the qualifying phase of the tournament. The qualifying phase consists of a group stage and a knockout stage, with a series of matches determining which teams advance to the main round.
