O'Brien Cup
origin
Below:
Larry O'Brien was named president of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1975 and left in 1984. One of O'Brien's first major accomplishments was the successful merger of the ABA (American Basketball Association), which solved the problems of skyrocketing salaries and declining ticket sales due to the vicious competition between the two leagues, including the very difficult "Oscar Robertson jersey" incident.
O'Brien's new labor agreement with the NBA players' union in 1983 is considered the blueprint and foundation for the development of the NBA league; and his greatest contribution to the reform of NBA rules was the establishment of the three-point line in 1979. Shortly after O'Brien's departure (1984), the NBA named the championship trophy the Larry O'Brien Cup.In 1991, O'Brien was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
