The Wales National Football Team, nicknamed "The Dragons", was founded on March 25, 1876, and is the first national soccer team in Wales.
The team traveled to Glasgow to play Scotland in their first match and lost 0-4. In the early years, internationals were limited to matches between the four representative teams from the British Isles, including the Home Four Corners Championship, which was won 12 times in total (five of which were tied).
However, FIFA ruled that no team could qualify for the final round without having to play, so it arranged for Israel and one of the runners-up in the European qualifying rounds to play a two-legged play-off to determine qualification for the final round, and Wales was fortunate enough to be drawn to represent the Europeans, winning the two-legged play-off 2-0 at the beginning of 1958 to gain the final ticket to the final round in Sweden.
In the final round of the tournament, the team was placed in Group "C", which consisted of Sweden, Hungary and Mexico. The team won all three group games against Hungary, a fading powerhouse, and went through to the final round of the tournament with Sweden. In the quarterfinals against eventual champions Brazil, the young Pelé scored the only goal and lost 0-1.
