A total of 34 rounds.

Between 1897 and 1950 the Dutch Football League was actually a tournament for the champions of the four regional leagues, and in 1950 the Dutch Football Association organized the first national league, dividing the six leagues of the four regional leagues into five groups, with each group also adopting a two-legged home-and-away system, and the winners of each of the five groups deciding on the winning team by means of a league match.

It was not until 1956 that the Dutch Football Association officially established a national league with a home-and-away system and abolished the Champions' Extra League, now known as the Dutch Football First Division. Upon completion of the season, the league champions directly qualify for the group stage of the next season's UEFA Champions League, while the runners-up need to participate in the qualifying rounds of the next season's UEFA Champions League. In addition, the 3rd and 4th places in the league qualify for the Europa League the following season.
