The conference before the first round of the new season talked about the team's failure to bring in Zubimendi. Slaughter said that despite the team's interest in bringing in the Spanish midfielder, Zubimendi ultimately chose not to join Liverpool.
Slotter said, "I've said many times that our squad is already very strong, so it's difficult to find the right players to strengthen it. Zubimendi was an option but he decided not to come. So we move on with the squad we have."
He also mentioned that the top brass had tried their best to bring in reinforcements and expressed full confidence in the current squad: "We are in a good position, the top brass tried hard to bring in reinforcements, Zubi Mendi didn't want to come and we tried everything. Even with the loss of Thiago, Matip and Adrian, we still have the same team structure. You always talk about transfers, but we actually have a positive squad."
Asked again about Liverpool's zero reinforcements this summer, Slotter responded, "I don't understand this topic, if you don't reinforce you get weaker? We keep the same squad and I believe we can help further and improve the players on the training ground. Other teams may have been strengthened by reinforcements, but that doesn't mean that new reinforcements will necessarily make your team stronger. Every player needs to be fully aware of their playing time and if you consistently bring in new players, the energy of the team will drop."
Slotter concluded by adding that he and the club's director are working hard to find suitable targets for reinforcements but do not intend to do so for the sake of it: "We are working hard to strengthen the squad and if we find the right person we will make an attempt, unfortunately the person we were looking at (Zubimendi) declined the offer."
