Mourinho made 94 appearances in Portugal's lower leagues, scoring 13 goals, and opted to retire in 1987, when he started his coaching career with the Victory youth team of Setubal.From 1992 to 2000, Mourinho worked as an assistant coach at Sporting Portugal, Porto, and Barcelona.
