2023 European Championship
Elimination rules
The UEFA Champions League is a two-legged competition, with the 1/8 finals to the semi-finals being played on a two-legged home and away basis, with the team scoring the most total goals in the two legs progressing to the final, which is decided in a single leg. The UEFA Champions League is one of the highest level tournaments in European soccer, and the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League are the most important, so the rules of the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League have a crucial impact on the fairness and competitiveness of the game.
A total of 32 teams will participate in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, divided into 8 groups of 4 teams each. Each group will play a single round robin, meaning each team will play 1 match against each of the other 3 teams. The winner gets 3 points, the loser gets 0 points and a draw gets 1 point. There will be 6 rounds of matches in the group stage, and the team with the highest number of points after each round will advance to the knockout stage matches. In case of a tie in points, the teams will be ranked in the following order:
1. Mutual competition points;
2. Mutual goal difference;
3. Away goals in reciprocal matches;
4. League goal difference;
5. Number of goals scored in the league;
6. League away goals.
The knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League involves 16 teams, the first and second place finishers of the eight groups in the group stage. There will be four rounds of matches in the knockout stage, namely the eighth-final, quarter-final, semi-final and final. Except for the final, the tournament will be played on a home-and-away basis, i.e., the two teams will play on their respective home grounds, with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser being knocked out of the tournament. If the total score of the two teams in the two rounds of the tournament is the same, extra time will be played directly, and if the extra time can not be divided into winners and losers, the final team will be decided through penalty kicks.
The 2023 UEFA Champions League final will be held in Turkey's Istanbul Neutral Stadium for a single-game tiebreaker, and if the two sides can't separate the winners in 90 minutes of regular time, then they'll play a 30-minute extra time, and if the extra time is still not enough to separate the winners, then a penalty shootout will be held to decide the final winner of the Big Ears Cup.
