Manchester United won the EFL Cup last season under Tan Hagar's first stint in charge and finished third in the Premier League to secure a place in the UEFA Europa League this year, but this season's results have gone downhill, with the Red Devils failing to defend the EFL Cup and bowing out of the UEFA Europa League group stage, and are now ranked eighth in the league. In a recent interview with the media, Tannhäuser admitted that the Red Devils' performance last season was superb, which seems to imply that the current result is "reasonable".

Tannhäuser was asked by the media about Liverpool leader Gopp's departure this summer, he said: "Gopp can control his own destiny, and when he wants to leave, he can leave in style, while we have to look at ourselves and continue to work hard to rebuild Manchester United, the team needs to get better, we played superbly last season, no one could have predicted the results of Manchester United last season, but the results of the current season have deteriorated, and we have to prevent the team from continuing to go downhill.
