From 2005 to 2006, Messi lived in Spain and was born in La Masia, and obtained Spanish citizenship on September 26, 2005, but played for his country of birth, Argentina.

From 2017 to 2019, Messi announced his return to the national team in August 2016.On October 10, 2017, Messi performed a hat-trick to end a 3-1 win over Ecuador and was helped by Chile's 0-3 loss to Brazil and Peru's and Colombia's 0-0 draws, which allowed Argentina to leapfrog into third place in its group and thrillingly reach the final round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In the 2021 Copa America, Lionel Messi's Argentina came out on top against nine other South American teams and beat host Brazil in the final to win the title, winning the tournament's Ballon d'Or and Golden Boot individually, finally ending his 16-year adult and Argentina's 28-year drought of national team titles.

On June 1, 2022, in the European and American Cup, Messi assisted twice to help Argentina beat the recent European champion Italy 3-0 to win the European and American Cup, the 40th crown of Messi's individual career.

Lionel Messi made his fifth World Cup appearance for the Argentina national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar; before the tournament, Messi said the tournament would be his last. In the finals, Argentina and France fought to a 3-3 draw in regulation time and extra time, sending the match to penalties. In the end, the penalty shootout 4-2 results over France, won the World Cup after a 36-year hiatus.

2023-present, July 14, 2024 Messi led Argentina in the 2024 Copa America final against Colombia, Messi was replaced early due to injury in the 66th minute of the game, Argentina showed resilience and dragged the game into extra time, in the tough 112th minute teammate Lautaro Martinez scored, Argentina finally won 1-0 against Colombia to win the team history of the Argentina won 1-0 against Colombia to claim its 16th Copa America title in team history. The victory ended Colombia's 28-match unbeaten streak and made Argentina the first country in history to win two consecutive Copa America titles and the World Cup.
