On June 27, 2024, the draw for the 18-team Asian qualifying round for the 2026 U.S.-Canada-Mexico FIFA World Cup was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the Chinese men's national soccer team was placed in Group C with Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Indonesia.

This phase of the 18-team tournament is divided into three groups with a total of 10 rounds of matches, which will be played on a double round-robin basis, home and away, from September 2024 to June 2025, with the top two teams from each group advancing directly to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Finals round, and the third and fourth place teams (6 teams in total) competing in the fourth phase of the tournament. The six teams in the fourth stage will be divided into two groups (three teams in each group) to play a single round-robin showdown, with the top teams from both groups advancing directly to the 2026 World Cup, and the two second-place teams deciding the winners through a playoff, with the winning team representing Asia in the World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will feature 48 teams in the final stage of the tournament, the largest number of teams in World Cup history.
