FC Barcelona's hopes of repurchasing Portugal international wing-back João Cancelo from Manchester City are dwindling, according to a new report from veteran Mundo Deportivo journalist Fernando Polo. The 30-year-old, who became an absolute starter for Barcelona during his loan spell last season, seems destined not to return to the Camp Nou despite making 42 appearances in all competitions in the 2023/2024 season, including 38 starts, and contributing four goals and five assists.

It has been reported that Manchester City have changed their strategy of sending Cancelo out on loan, and they are no longer inclined to continue to let the Portuguese star leave the team on loan. This change is mainly because Manchester City received from the Saudi Arabia giants Riyadh Crescent a very attractive offer. According to Saudi media outlet Sport, the two clubs have reached a unanimous agreement on the transfer of Cancelo.

According to the agreement, Riyadh Crescent will pay a transfer fee of up to €35 million to wrestle Cancelo away from Manchester City. At the same time, they will also sign a three-year contract with the Portuguese international, which certainly provides Cancelo with a new and challenging stage.

Cancelo's departure is undoubtedly a shame for Barcelona, as he was an important part of the team's wing-back position during his loan spell last season. However, in the face of City's firm stance and Riyadh Crescent's generous offer, Barcelona seems to have no way back.

For Cancelo himself, joining Riyadh Crescent is undoubtedly a fresh start. He will continue to show his talent and strength in the Saudi League, bringing help and contribution to his new team. At the same time, the three-year contract also provides more stability and security for his career.
