How Uruguay fared in the World Cup
How Uruguay did in the World Cup
Uruguay has won two World Cups, the inaugural Uruguay in 1930 and Brazil in 1950.
The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. At that time, intercontinental transportation was still very undeveloped, and European teams traveling to Uruguay had to spend more than half a month crossing the Atlantic Ocean by ship, as well as adapting to the opposing seasons and the very different climate of the southern hemisphere. What's more, the players would not be able to play in their clubs' leagues for more than two months. Some clubs even banned players from traveling to South America. In the end, it was only through the intervention of FIFA President Remet that four European teams, France, Belgium, Yugoslavia and Romania, were able to participate. All the matches of this edition were held in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. The Uruguayan government built the 100,000-capacity Century Stadium for the occasion, which was a super-giant soccer stadium at the time. Uruguay defeated Peru and Romania in the group stage, and then thrashed Yugoslavia 6-1 in the semifinals, with Pedro Cea scoring a hat trick. Meanwhile, Argentina, the other favorite to win the tournament, also reached the final with a 6-1 victory over the United States. In the final, Uruguay, with the advantage of home field, won the championship with a 4-2 victory over Argentina after trailing 1-2 in the first half. Uruguay's captain, Naz Nazarzi, lifted his first World Championship trophy. Uruguay won all four of their matches, scoring 15 goals and conceding only three.
At the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, the tournament was based on a points system, with the first place finishers in each of the four groups playing a round-robin tournament, with the winner being the team with the most points. Uruguay started the tournament with an 8 - 0 win over Bolivia, their only opponent in the group. Uruguay then drew 2-2 with Spain and beat Sweden 3-2 before facing unstoppable hosts Brazil in their final match. Earlier, Brazil had romped to 7 - 1 and 6 - 1 victories over Sweden and Spain to move one point ahead of Uruguay, who needed only a draw to win the title. The final match was scheduled to be played at the Maracana Stadium. The 80,000-seat Maracana Stadium was packed with 199,954 fans ahead of the much-anticipated "final". Neither team scored in the first half. Only two minutes into the second half, Brazil scored a goal from Friassa, and the Brazilians had the Remit Cup in their sights. However, in the 66th minute, Uruguay's Juan Schiafino equalized, and in the 79th minute, Ghija struck the decisive blow to give Uruguay their second World Cup title with a 2-1 victory.
that's all...
