17 years of fighting, 36 years of waiting, a handful of tears.

I gladly accept whatever God has in store for me. I had no business being here. I'm the luckiest man in the world.

I fled my war-torn home across the turbulent Atlantic Ocean. More than a decade has passed, and I have long forgotten what my homeland looks like on the other side of the ocean. This beautiful maple-leaf country that embraced me with open arms is my true home.

And now I am living every day like a dream. I would bow and scrape for the team because I've had so much help from you guys.

In Munich, I was quick and fast, and I was a black eagle in the backfield, protecting the back goal with my wings. When the maple leaf was embroidered on my red jersey, I would turn into a black stallion, weaving in and out of the enemy's line, speeding through the enemy's line, stirring up the enemy's defense.

You asked me what I'm after. Money? Fame? Honor?

All I ask is to be able to continue to run free on this green field of equality.

After 36 years of waiting, the Maple Leafs will welcome their long-awaited World Cup at the end of the year.

Alphonso Davies still left moved to tears on air after the World Cup.

Listen carefully to Alphonso Davies' accent and you'll notice that he has a strong African accent. In fact, the young Canadian superstar was not born in Canada.

In 1999, civil war broke out again in Liberia, and with the mass exodus of refugees, refugee camps mushroomed in nearby West African countries. Little Davies was born in the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana. In 2006, five-year-old Alphonso Davis and his five siblings followed in their parents' footsteps across the Atlantic Ocean to faraway North America in search of a more stable living environment. A year later, they settled in Edmonton, Canada.

When Alphonso Davies' family first came to Canada, the financial pressures were almost too much for the family, as Alphonso's parents had to work long hours to support themselves and their six children. Alphonso Davies also had to earn a little money to supplement his family's income.

Alphonso Davies attended Mother Theresa Catholic school, a relatively inexpensive parochial school, and soon after entering the school, his teachers began to marvel at Davies' athletic prowess. In basketball, baseball, track and field, and most importantly, soccer, Davies excelled above his peers.

Davies began playing on local amateur and varsity teams. But like many immigrants, the language barrier caused a slight disruption in his life.
