He joined the youth system of FC Waldhof Mannheim in 2001 and Karlsruhe Youth in 2009.
Çalhanoglu started his career at Sporting Karlsruhe in Germany's second division in the 2011-12 season, and was noticed by a number of Bundesliga teams for his performances, eventually signing a four-year contract with Hamburg.He continued to play for Karlsruhe on loan in the 2012-13 season, before officially transferring to Hamburg at the end of the season.
2013-14 was the first Bundesliga season of Çalhanoglu's career, and just after joining Hamburger Sporting Club he settled into a starting role.
In the summer of 2014 Leverkusen paid €14.5 million to Hamburg and Çalhanoglu officially transferred to FC Leverkusen, signing a five-year deal with his new team. Çalhanoglu was nominated for the 2014 European Golden Boy Award.
On July 3, 2017, Serie A's AC Milan officially announced the signing of Çalhanoglu, with both sides signing a four-year deal; the transfer fee is €20 million plus a €5 million floating clause.
On June 22, 2021, Çalhanoglu signed a three-year deal with Serie A club Inter Milan, a fierce rival of his previous club.
