Southgate moved to the position of Middlesbrough manager in May 2006 at the end of his playing career; he took over the reins of the England U-21 between 2013 and 2016, and took over as England manager from August 2016 until July 2024, following a decision by the English Football Association.
Southgate was appointed by Middlesbrough as their new manager in June 2006, following the departure of Steve McClaren to England, but his appointment was controversial as he had not yet obtained the UEFA professional license required to coach a top-flight team in Europe. He was granted permission by the Premier League authorities to stay on until November of the same year, and Middlesbrough successfully appealed on the grounds that Southgate had recently been an international player and was too busy to attend the coaching course, which he was attending and expected to graduate from in the summer of 2009.Southgate was controversially sacked less than two hours after leading his side to a 2-0 defeat to Derby County on October 20, 2009, and at the time Middlesbrough were sitting in fourth place in the Championship, one point adrift of the leaders, but club chairman Steve Gibson said the decision to sack Southgate had been made a fortnight before the game.
After the 2016 European Football Championships, it was Sam Allardyce who was supposed to be the manager of the England national soccer team, but he was sacked due to an alleged money and power deal scandal, and finally took over the managerial position in coordination with the English Football Association. After finishing runner-up at the 2020 UEFA European Championships and qualifying for the 2022 World Cup final round, Southgate's contract was renewed by the Football Association until 2024.At the 2022 World Cup, Southgate guided England to the last eight of the tournament, where they fell to a 1-2 defeat at the hands of France.
In the 2024 UEFA European Championship, Southgate once again led England to the final with his outstanding leadership ability, and finally lost 1:2 to Spain, which was much stronger than him, following the runner-up of the 2021 UEFA European Championship, and defended the runner-up of the 2024 UEFA European Championship again.
