Southgate is an English footballer who plays as a defender and retired as manager of the England national soccer team, known as "Southgate".

Southgate started his career at Crystal Palace, where he played as a midfielder from 1989-1995 and was later appointed captain, leading the team to win the second-tier First Division title and promotion to the Premier League in 1994, but the South London team was relegated back to the First Division after only one season in the top flight, and Southgate moved to Aston Villa for £2.5 million, making 152 league starts in four years with Crystal Palace. After moving to Aston Villa in 1995, Southgate moved to center back and was part of a formidable five-man Villa defense. The captain was retained by the team in 2000 when Southgate asked for a transfer, citing "career aspirations". Southgate eventually left the club a year later in 2001.
But Southgate didn't join the giants, instead joining Middlesbrough in the same year, partly to rejoin former Villa teammate Ehiogu. He immediately became a fan favorite at the Riverside Stadium, and was voted the team's Player of the Year after a string of solid performances in his first season, notably without a yellow card. He spent the remainder of his playing career at Middlesbrough, signing a contract that lasted until 2007, when Southgate turned manager and, although still registered as a player, did not play for the first team or come off the bench again.
