Mutombo was born on June 25, 1966 in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the seventh child in a family of eleven siblings. During his early years, he received some education in Kinshasa, but his basketball talent soon became apparent. He later traveled to the United States to continue his education and completed his high school studies there.
In the United States, Mutombo got his start in basketball and continued his basketball career at Georgetown University. He became an outstanding basketball player at Georgetown and was known for his great defense and rebounding skills. He was selected as an All-Star several times during his college years and helped Georgetown win some important games.
In 1991, Mutombo entered the NBA draft and was selected fourth overall, joining the Denver Nuggets. Mutombo's career also included playing for the Atlanta Hawks

and the Houston Rockets
and other NBA teams.
