Bilbao have had a "pure origin" policy since 1912. This means that the team is only made up of Basque players from the club's youth teams or from other clubs. They only use players of Basque origin, so most of the players in the team are Spanish Basques or French Basques. Real Sociedad has a similar policy, but since 1989 it has been relaxed to allow foreign players to play for the team.
