In a recent interview, soccer legend Yaya Toure spoke highly of Arsenal's new midfield star Declan Rice and made an in-depth comparison between him and Rodney, the centerpiece of the midfield for Manchester City and the Spanish national team. Toure's comments not only showed his recognition of the young player, but also revealed his expectations for Rice's future development.
Toure began by emphasizing the criteria for the team Rice should play for: "Rice, such a talented player, deserves to shine in a championship-level team. Because history tells us that the teams that have won the league trophies have had the best players at the time." These words are undoubtedly a high degree of recognition of Rice's strength, but also a kind of hope for his future career.
Toure was both fair and objective when comparing Rice to Rodri: "We can't ignore Rodri's outstanding contribution to Manchester City and the Spanish national team, as well as the many accolades he has accrued during his career. However, Rice is also a great player and his competitiveness and versatility on the field is impressive. Although Rodri currently leads the trophy count, Rice is well placed to close that gap by winning titles this season."
Talking about Rice's style of play, Toure was full of praise: "Rice's performance in the game is comprehensive and varied, he can complete accurate stealing, but also can take the ball forward, and even in the key moment to send an assist. This style of play is quite similar to my youth, both are the kind of all-round midfielder who can defend and participate in the attack. Rice is always active on the field, looking for opportunities to assist his teammates, and is also good at cracking the opposing team's defensive system."
However, Toure also pointed out the difference between Rice and Rodri in terms of their positions and responsibilities on the field: "Rodri plays more of an attacking role in the organization, he is good at reading the game, and is able to effectively stop the opponent's counter-attacks and passes. Rice, on the other hand, has been used more as an attacking initiator and a key part of Arteta's tactical system, playing more often as a No. 8 than as a traditional No. 6 defensive midfielder. Of course, with the addition of all-round midfielders such as Merino, it's possible that Rice will return to his preferred No. 6 position more often this season."
