Forest had a good start to the game, Bjorn Johnson opened the scoring in the 19th minute, bringing the total to 2-0. Siffield United didn't give up, and team leader Higginbottom was even more fired up before half-time, clashing with Forest players to cause chaos, and then Siffield United players turned over in the second half, scoring two goals in a row to bring the total to 2-2, and the two armies were in overtime without a record, and had to shoot each other to score a victory or a loss.

Forest's goalkeeper Bryce Samba made three saves in a 12-yard shootout that resulted in a 3-2 win for Forest. After the game, a large number of the home team's fans rushed into the stadium to celebrate, with some even hitting Sydney United striker Billy Schaub in the head, causing him to suffer a stitched-up injury. Forest's opponents in the promotion play-off final were Hattersfield, who had earlier eliminated Luton in the last four.
