Nagelsmann is a German former footballer and current soccer coach of the German national soccer team. He has coached Bundesliga club Hoffenheim since February 11, 2016, the youngest manager in Bundesliga history.
After his meniscus and tendon injuries, as well as a second surgery for osteoarthritis, Nagelsmann didn't play any official matches in 2007 either, moreover leading to him announcing the end of his career at the tender age of 20.
After finishing his playing career, Nagelsmann continued to fulfill his original contract with the club as an assistant coach under the then second-string team manager Tuchel. This experience gave Nagelsmann the idea of launching a coaching career. He then moved to his former club, Munich 1860, also as assistant coach to Alexander Schmidt, then head of the Under-17s, and joined Hoffenheim in the 2010-11 season, where he first assumed full responsibility for the training of the youth department before joining the first-team coaching staff in December 2012 as assistant coach under interim head coach Frank Kramer. He went on to assist Kramer's successors, Marco Kurz and Markus Gisdol, in helping the team to survive relegation in the Bundesliga.In the 2013-14 season, Nagelsmann relinquished his position as assistant coach of the first team to take over as head coach of the club's Under-19 team.In late October 2015, Hoffenheim announced that Nagelsmann would be taking over as head coach of the club's Under-19 team from the 2016-17 season, after completing the training course required for his coaching of the Bundesliga side. Nagelsmann took over the reins of the Bundesliga side on February 11, 2016, ahead of schedule, still in the bottom two. He was given a new contract until June 30, 2019, and led the team to relegation and then to the Champions League in the following two seasons.
After joining RB Leipzig at the end of his 2019 tenure, the Champions League was a stunning breakthrough: while Leipzig and Lyon were seemingly fortunate to have been drawn together in a group without the other top five leagues to reach the quarterfinals, the two teams came out of the lineup as big dark horses knocking out a number of powerhouses along the way to reach the quarterfinals.
