The stadium was originally named after the former Prussian province of Westphalia (today part of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia). It is the largest stadium in Germany and set a new record for European soccer attendance in the 2004/05 season with 1.4 million spectators.

In the 1960s Dortmund had begun preparations to build a new stadium to replace the old "Red Globe", but the massive project was halted due to financial problems. 1971 saw the city of Cologne withdraw from hosting the 1974 FIFA World Cup due to financial problems, and Dortmund became the replacement, and the funds for the new stadium were transferred to Dortmund, but funding was still tight. Funding for the new stadium was also transferred to Dortmund, but money was still scarce, so the builders adopted a new, inexpensive design based on prefabricated components with a capacity of 54,000 spectators, which was approved for construction on October 19, 1971, and was opened in just one year.

The 1974 FIFA World Cup at the Westfalenstadion featured three preliminary round matches and a second round group stage match between Brazil and the Netherlands. Dortmund were relegated to the second division in 1972, and were the only Bundesliga 2 side to host the 1974 World Cup. 1976 saw Dortmund return to the Bundesliga, and they were finally able to bring the top flight to the Westfalenstadion.

After two extensions in the 1990s, the Westfalenstadion has a very modern appearance: the north facade of the stadium is made of an all-steel frame with a glass curtain wall of suspended aluminum alloys. The two extensions cost a total of DM 110 million.

In 2005, the naming rights of the Westfalenstadion were sold to an insurance and investment company, Siguerne Iduna, for 20 million euros, and the name was changed to Siguerne Iduna Park in December.

In addition, Westfalen's South Stand has always been one of the most beautiful sights at home games. Its frequent superstar tifo's, and the frenetic home atmosphere have made Sigduna Park one of the most famous Devils home grounds in Europe.
