The Aomori Sandman Festival (佞武多祭り) is one of the three major festivals in Tohoku, along with the Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕祭) and the Akita Kannon Festival (秋田竿燈祭), and is held annually at the beginning of August in the summer months, and is said to be a fusion of the Chinese Tanabata Festival (七夕祭) and the local customs in Tsugaru, and is held in order to ward off the tiredness and drowsiness that comes from the laborious agricultural work in the summer, as well as to drive away sandman, and the most important attraction of the festival is the parade of gigantic, ornate, and fantastically shaped lanterns. The biggest attraction of the festival is the parade of giant and fantastically shaped lanterns accompanied by many Haneto dancers. These giant doll-shaped lanterns, also known as "sycophants" (佞武多), are based on Chinese legends, Kabuki, and historical figures, and are created by sycophant artists and craftsmen using bamboo strips, wire, and paper. It is said that the process of choosing a theme for a lantern, drafting a piece of artwork, and constructing the piece, and then setting it up on the stage, takes nearly a year. It is said that it takes nearly a year to select, draft, build, and set up a Sandman lantern, and one can't help but admire the craftsmanship behind each piece.
