The Scottish Premier League is the 1st tier of the Scottish Football League system, the highest tier of the professional league system, the highest tier of the league system and the top tier of soccer in Scotland, and was established in July 2013 to replace the former Scottish Premier League. The Scottish Football League is the third oldest national soccer league in the world, having been founded after the English Football League in 1888, and a week after the second oldest, the Irish Football League. The inaugural Scottish Football League consisted of eleven teams, including Celtic, Rangers and Hearts, but not Queen's Park, which was in its prime at the time. The inaugural title was shared between Rangers and Dumbarton, the only time the Scottish top flight has ever been shared by two teams.

Following the precedent set in 1992 when 24 English League One clubs broke away from the English Football League to form the Premier League to run the top flight independently, the ten teams in the Scottish Premier League requested in 1997 to break away from the Scottish Football League (SFL) to form a new administratively and financially independent Scottish Premier League to monopolize revenues such as television broadcasting fees for the top flight teams, whereas commercial revenues from the Scottish Football League After lengthy discussions with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and the Scottish Football League (SFL), the 40 Scottish Football League teams voted in December 1997 to establish a new top flight, the Scottish Premier League, for the 1998-99 season. The number of teams increased from ten to twelve from the 2000-01 season.
