What honors have the Celtics received
Celtic Scotland's top flight has won 54 titles, the FA Cup 42 times, the League Cup 21 times and the European Cup once.
Celtic won the Champions League in 1967, becoming the first British team to do so, with only Real Madrid (6 times), Benfica (2 times), Inter Milan (2 times) and AC Milan (1 time) having won the title. The 1967 Celtic team, known as the 'Lions of Lisbon', were also the first men's soccer team in Europe to win the 'treble', and the only team to date to do so with all local players, all born within a 30-mile radius of Celtic Park.
Jock Steyn took over as manager in 1965, along with Jimmy McGrory, a former Celtic player and captain, but his achievements as manager far outweighed his playing career, winning 25 major championships in his twelve years in charge (1965-78, with a one-year lay-off due to a road traffic accident in 1975/76): the European Champions Cup, 10 League Championships, 8 Scottish Cups and 6 League Cups. He is regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time. He led Celtic to nine consecutive league titles between 1966-74, a world record at the time, and in 1965 Celtic regained the Scottish Cup, which had been lost for eleven years, by beating Dunfermline 3-2, and the following year (1966) the league title was returned to Celtic.
In 1967, Celtic were invincible, winning all the competing trophies: the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Glasgow Cup and, most importantly, the European Champions Cup, making it an unprecedented quintuple-header.
Billy McNeil.
Taking over as manager in August 1978, the club won the Super League title in its first season with a 4-2 victory over Rangers in the final round of the competition. McNeil went on to win two more Super League titles (1980/81 and 1981/82), the Scottish Cup (1980) and the League Cup (1983), but due to a lack of success in European competitions and disputes with the hierarchy over the allocation of funds, McNeil ended his short-lived career as Celtic manager in 1983 by moving to Manchester City.
Martin O'Neill took over as Celtic manager in the summer of 2000. O'Neill, a native of Ulster, Northern Ireland, was a midfielder during the golden age of Nottingham Forest, under the tutelage of renowned manager Brian Goloff, who led Leicester City to promotion to the English Premier League in 1996, holding on to the upper echelons of the table with a limited number of players. During his tenure, O'Neill has led Celtic to three Scottish Premier League titles in five years, and was awarded the "Homegrown Triple Crown" in his first year, reviving Celtic's former glory.
