After the 1-3 home defeat against Liverpool in the first round of the Champions League, Milan manager Paolo Fonseca gave an interview to Sky Sport Italia, giving an in-depth analysis and reflection on the match.
Fonseca began by recognizing Liverpool's strengths and said his team played well in the opening stages, but then mistakes in defending set-pieces changed the course of the game. "We played against Liverpool, they are a great team. We started well but they took their chances after the restart and scored two goals from set-pieces which changed the game and our mental balance." He emphasized that at this high level of competition, details make the difference and any small mistake could lead to a reversal of the result.
Talking about the set-piece conceded goals, Fonseca said the team had prepared accordingly but failed to execute effectively. "The first goal conceded was against an individual for a man-to-man defense and we prepared against their two center backs. But anyway, that's part of the game and we need to do better in the future." He admitted that the team still has to improve on set-piece defense.
Regarding player performances, Fonseca singled out the play of Raphael Leal. "Léo played poorly in a game where we tried to play him against Liverpool's right back Alexander-Arnold in limited minutes, but with little success." He also said that the team made several attempts and adjustments during the game but failed to achieve the desired results.
Speaking about formation choices, Fonseca said he respects everyone's opinion, but the team needs to find the tactical system that suits them best. "I think we can use several different formations, but our defense is too weak and our individual confrontation is poor, and we often make wrong decisions." He emphasized that the team is trying to find the best configuration of midfielders to maximize their fighting power. At the same time, he affirmed the threat of the double midfield structure in the game and said the team will continue to optimize in this aspect.
Finally, Fonseca encouraged his team to learn from the defeat and prepare for the coming matches. "We must try to maintain continuity and do better in the upcoming matches." He is confident that as long as the team stays united and works hard, they will be able to get out of the doldrums and embrace a brighter future.
