Following the 1-3 home defeat against Liverpool in the first round of the Champions League, Milan striker Alvaro Morata spoke to Sky Sport Italia and gave an in-depth reflection on the game.
Morata began by recognizing his team's positive performance in the early stages of the game, "We started well and it's not easy to start like that against one of the best teams in Europe like Liverpool." He admitted that despite the good start, the team's mistakes in defending set-pieces led to two goals conceded, which made the game tough. "We conceded two goals from set pieces after that and it will be difficult to come back against a team like that." He confessed.
Morata gave a negative answer to the question of whether the result of the match reflected an attitude or tactical problem: "It's not a question of attitude or tactics, it's soccer." He emphasized that the game of soccer is full of uncertainty and that the team needs to respond better to difficult situations and put in an immediate effort. "We could have scored from set-pieces, but of course we have to react better when facing difficult situations."
When asked if the team lacked leaders, Morata said he disagreed with the idea: "There are a lot of important players in this team, I don't think so." He believes that the team needs to be united and not give the opponents anything to take advantage of. "We all have to be a united team and not give our opponents the chance to hit us." He emphasized.
Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Inter Milan, Morata said that the team must react immediately: "Of course, otherwise the situation will be difficult. It's not a 1/8 or 1/4 final, it's the first Champions League game. But you have to understand that against certain teams every detail makes a difference." He called on the whole team to remain focused and combative and to be fully prepared for the upcoming matches.
