Prior to the professionalization of Chinese soccer in 1994, Sichuan's best result had long been the fifth place in the National Games, which was won in the youth division of the Third National Games in 1975 and the Seventh National Games in 1989. After the establishment of the Chinese professional league, Sichuan soccer has been striving for the "championship dream", but has never been able to achieve it.
In 2000, Mianyang Fungu beat Tianjin 2-0 in the final of the National Football League B, the first national championship in Sichuan's soccer history.
