It has always been the dream of Sichuan soccer to pursue

But it's been "on the road" for years.

Prior to the professionalization of Chinese soccer in 1994, Sichuan's best result had long been the fifth place in the National Games, which was won in the youth division of the Third National Games in 1975 and the Seventh National Games in 1989. After the establishment of the Chinese professional league, Sichuan soccer has been striving for the "championship dream", but has never been able to achieve it.

In 2000, Mianyang Fungu beat Tianjin 2-0 in the final of the National Football League B, the first national championship in Sichuan's soccer history. After that, the closest Sichuan soccer came to a title was the 2004 AFC Cup, when Sichuan Guancheng made it all the way to the final. The team was beaten 1-2 in a come-from-behind victory against Shandong Luneng at the He Long Stadium in Changsha, and finished as runners-up in the AFC Cup. 2007 saw the new Sichuan soccer team finish as runners-up again after losing to Shanghai Dongya in the China B final.

On November 5, 2018, a strong Sichuan Annapurna side led by Ri Bing, after qualifying for promotion, beat Nantong Zhiyun 1-0 in the final of the Chinese B League at the Rugao Stadium in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, winning the Chinese B League Championship for Sichuan soccer. Many people also regarded this championship as the first real national professional league title in the history of Sichuan soccer.

As for the Chinese First Division title, Sichuan soccer has missed it many times. Chengdu Sheffield United managed to overtake it twice, in 2007 and 2010, but both times they came second. Especially in the 2010 season, the team was only 1 point behind Guangzhou Evergrande, and it was a pity to miss the China First Division Championship in the end. Chengdu Rongcheng managed to overtake in the 2021 season, but still has a long way to go to win the China First Division title.

However, Sichuan soccer's dream should not be limited to this. For the first time in history, two Sichuan teams have entered the Chinese Super League, and both Chengdu Rongcheng and Sichuan Jiuniu will have to aim higher, expecting them to come into contact with even shinier trophies in the future!
