Former Manchester United midfielder James Garner has opened up for the first time in a recent interview about a pivotal conversation he had with new Manchester United manager, Jurgen Ten Hagar, and how it influenced his eventual decision to leave the club.

Garner recalls having a frank and direct exchange with Ten Hagar when he returned to United in the summer of 2022. He describes Ten Hag as a "very approachable" but at the same time "very strict" person, a character trait that stands out in the United coaching ranks. "Ten Hagar would never allow anyone to break the rules, he would be outspoken and point out problems and take punitive measures when necessary." Garner said as much.

In that all-important conversation, Garner asked Ten Hagar directly about his future role and position on the team. "I asked him directly if I would be on the roster or if he thought I could contribute to the team." However, Garner said he sensed from Ten Hagar's answer that he may not be in the team's long-term plans.

"I felt that the conversation didn't go as well as I would have liked and it prompted me to seriously consider my career path." Garner admits that he realizes that his position may not be secure in United's competitive environment. Especially when the club started signing a number of midfielders, he became more convinced that his chances of playing at United would become limited.

"Nothing is guaranteed in soccer, but when you see teams start bringing in new players to fill your position, you can probably see where you are." Garner said. As a result, he made a brave decision - to leave United and look for first-team opportunities elsewhere.
