Temhag opted not to start Rashford, who has been in hot form lately, in United's Premier League match against Crystal Palace, a decision that sparked widespread skepticism after the game. However, Vieira, a former French international and now a veteran of the soccer world, has come out in defense of Ten Hagar and believes that there is nothing wrong with the manager's decision.
Vieira made it clear in his interview that Ten Hagar's decision-making as head coach is based on observations from midweek training and consideration of the team's overall interests. "I think the manager goes through the midweek training to help him make the best decisions." Vieira said so, implying that Ten Hagar's decisions are well thought out and not spur of the moment.
For Rashford himself, Vieira offered more direct advice. He believes Rashford should reflect on why he hasn't been given the chance to start and work on improving his performances to meet the higher expectations placed on him by the manager, the fans and the club. "I think Rashford should ask himself why he didn't start and he has to do better." Vieira's words are certainly a spur to Rashford.
Vieira also noted that Rashford's mood seemed to be affected when he came on as a substitute. "When he came on as a substitute today, I think he was disappointed and it didn't help him." Vieira said. He believes that as a professional player, Rashford should learn to adjust his mindset when he comes on as a substitute and prove his worth to the manager with practical actions.
Finally, Vieira gave his own assessment of Ten Hag's decision-making, "Looking at Rashford's performance, I think Ten Hag was right not to start him." Although he didn't elaborate on the specific areas in which Rashford underperformed, the comment certainly shows his support for Ten Hagar's decision.
