On August 26, 2005 the league was officially opened. Hyundai Motor Company Limited is the sponsor of the league. There are currently twelve teams in the league, eleven of which are from Australian cities and one from New Zealand.
The regular season is a round-robin tournament with a total of 33 games (three round-robin matches) for each team, with the top six teams advancing to the playoffs, where the winner of the playoffs is the overall league champion, and the regular season champion is the winning team, with the overall champion being honored more highly than the regular season champion, and the regular season champion and the overall league champion both qualifying to play in the following year's AFC Champions League.
