Born in Columbia, Missouri, Porter originally attended local Tolton Catholic High School.In March 2017, the family moved to Seattle and Porter transferred to Nathan Hale High School, coached by former NBA star Brandon Roy. Taking home the All-State title, he also posted a 29-game winning record. Porter was named one of the top newcomers in the state by Rivals.com and ESPN. Porter also participated in the 2017 Nike Basketball Summit, scoring 19 points in 23 minutes of playing time to help the U.S. defeat the World Team 98-87.
Porter originally committed to attend the University of Washington in July 2016, but after that, Laurenzo Lomar was relieved of his head coaching position by the University of Washington and his father, Michael Porter, Sr. moved to the University of Missouri as an assistant coach. Porter contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 94-89 win over the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the 2023 NBA Finals, helping the Nuggets win their first NBA championship in team history.
