Former England international Danny Murphy has given his insights on the current situation and future prospects of Manchester United in an interview. He believes that despite United's effective reinforcements at the back, the team's weakness at the attacking end is still prominent, which could be a stumbling block to their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Murphy firstly affirmed United's reinforcement work in the backline: "United have brought in good players in the backline, which will undoubtedly provide them with strong support in the defensive end. A solid defense is the cornerstone of a team's success, but relying on defense alone is not enough to stand out in such a competitive league as the EPL."
However, he turned the tables and pointed to United's offensive problems: "However, United's biggest problem at the moment is the lack of goals. Last season, they were one of the teams in the top half of the league that tied for the least number of goals scored, which speaks volumes about their lack of power in the attacking end. If this problem is not effectively solved, it will be difficult for them to achieve the desired ranking in the table."
Murphy also gave his opinion on the United's reinforcements in the transfer market: "United signed Zylkiser, but in my opinion, he is not a player who can immediately solve the problem of scoring goals. He is the only attacker among the new recruits, but he is after all a young player, both in terms of scoring ability and experience in the center forward position are still lacking. Therefore, we can't expect him to immediately become the team's scoring weapon."
Finally, Murphy expressed his concern about United's future prospects: "In the highly competitive Premier League, the ability to score goals is crucial to a team's performance. If United cannot make a breakthrough in the attacking end, then even if they do well in creating chances and displaying creativity, it will be difficult for them to go too far in the fight for the title or the fourth place. Therefore, I think United need to solve their goal-scoring dilemma as soon as possible to ensure they can achieve the desired results this season."
