Laporte now represents the Spanish national soccer team in international tournaments.
Born in Arjean, France, Laporte is a dual French/Spanish citizen and has represented the French national youth teams at all levels.
In 2010, Laporte joined the youth camp of Athletic Club de Bilbao in the First Division of Spanish soccer.
Laporte signed for Manchester City in January 2018 near the end of the winter transfer window for a fee of £57 million. He was given the number 14 shirt.

In August 2019, Laporte was named in France's squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 soccer championship qualifiers against Albania and Andorra. However, just two days later, he missed out with an injury while playing for his club.
Due to Laporte's family background, he is of Basque origin through his great-grandparents. He was able to choose to play internationally for either France or Spain, and on 11 May 2021, the Spanish Cabinet of Ministers approved Laporte's naturalization as a Spanish national, giving Laporte, who had not had the opportunity to play for France for many years, the chance to join the Spanish national soccer team for the 2020 UEFA European Championships.
On May 24, 2021, Laporte was selected for the Spanish national soccer team as expected.
In November 2022, Laporte was named to the final 26-man Spain squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, back number 24.
In June 2023, Laporte was named to the final 23-man Spain squad for the final week of the 2023 UEFA Nations League, back number 14, and won the title with the team.
In June 2024, Laporte was named to the final 26-man Spain squad for the 2024 UEFA European Football Championships and assisted the team to the title.
