Deschamps' soccer career
Deschamps is a former member of the France national soccer team who played as a midfielder, started over 100 matches for the national team, and led the French national soccer team to the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2000 UEFA European Football Championship double as captain. Now the head coach of France, he led the French team to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, becoming only the third person in history after Zagallo and Beckenbauer to win the World Cup as a player and manager. He has been described as one of the best French superstars in world soccer.
playing time
Deschamps' first career club was Nantes in 1985. He then played for some of the best teams in Ligue 1, including Marseille and Bordeaux. During his time with Marseille, he won the Ligue 1 title.
Joined Juventus in Serie A in 1994. In addition to three Serie A titles (1995, 1997, 1998), it also included the 1996 UEFA Champions League title. The title won on behalf of the French national team in the 1998 World Cup was also a very significant award for Deschamps.
He left Juventus in 1999 to play for Chelsea in the Premier League, winning the FA Cup. After one season he moved to Valencia, a La Liga contender, also for one year. Deschamps won the 2000 UEFA European Championship, but announced his retirement from the national team a year later (2001), and the end of his playing career.
coaching career
After his retirement, Deschamps coached Ligue 1 powerhouse Monaco. He led the club to the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League final, but finished second to Portuguese Premier League rivals Porto, led by Jose Mourinho, 0-3, before leaving in 2005 due to a falling out with the club's president.
In 2006 he returned to Juventus as coach. Juventus was relegated to the second division, and he successfully led the club back to the first division. After only one season, in early May 2009, Ligue 1 leaders Marseille announced that Deschamps would take over as coach for the next season.
After the 2012 UEFA European Cup, Deschamps replaced Blancs as France's head coach, and in 2018 Deschamps led the young and talented French team to the 2018 World Cup, defeating Argentina, Uruguay and Croatia in the knockout rounds before winning the Copa Libertadores, making him only the third person in the world to win the World Cup in both his career as a player and a coach.
