Gündoğan plays as a midfielder. He currently plays for English Premier League club Manchester City, and was a star midfielder for Borussia Dortmund in the 2011/12 season when they won the Bundesliga and German Cup. He captained the German national soccer team and retired from the team on August 20, 2024, the third player since Euro 2024 to announce his retirement from the German national team.
On June 2, 2016, Gündogan signed a four-year contract with Premier League side Manchester City for an estimated fee of £20 million. He was the club's first signing under former Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola.In August 2019, he signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City . In seven seasons with the club, Gündoğan played 304 games for City, contributing 60 goals and 37 assists, winning 14 titles with the team, including five Premier League titles, one Champions League title, two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.
On June 26, 2023, FC Barcelona officially announced that Gündoğan had joined the club on a free agent basis, signing a 2+1 contract.
On August 21, 2024, Gündoğan reached an agreement on his return to Manchester City, with Gündoğan returning to join the club as a free agent on a one-year deal.
Gündoğan made his debut for the German national soccer team on October 11, 2011, when he came on as a substitute for captain Philipp Lahm in the last six minutes of Germany's 3-1 victory over the Belgian national soccer team in a UEFA European Championship 2012 qualifying match at the Mercury Entertainment Arena in Düsseldorf.On August 20, 2024, Gündoğan announced his retirement from the German national soccer team.
