Durant played his earliest basketball career with the PG Jaguars, a youth basketball team in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) that won several national championships. Durant was also teammates at the time with future NBA players Michael Beasley (Heat) and Chris Braswell (University of North Carolina at Charlotte).
In Montrose, Durant was named the Washington Post's Basketball Player of the Year for his scoring and stealing performances.
During his time in Montrose, he participated in the Les Schwab Invitational, a national invitational basketball tournament held in Oregon. Durant's teammates on the Montrose team included Greivis Vasquez, and their coach Stu Vetter described Durant as a hard-working player with incredible shooting skills, ball-handling, and some high-speed movement. Named MVP of the 2006 McDonald's All-Star Game, Durant is widely regarded as the third best high school player among all American high school players, behind Chase Budinger and Greg Oden.

Durant's freshman year on the starting basketball team for the University of Texas at Austin, he played in 35 games during the season before eventually falling to USC in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Texas finished with its third 12-4 record.
Entering the postseason, Durant was widely touted by the media as the top freshman in the Big 12 and a top candidate to be voted Freshman of the Year, he averaged 25.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game during his freshman season, he averaged 28.9 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in twelve games with the University of Texas Longhorns, he scored a four-time collegiate career high in scoring of 37 points, the Durant had thirty 20-point games his freshman year.
In March 2007, Durant was named the NABC Player of the Year and took home the Adolph Rupp Award becoming the first student-athlete to win these awards.On March 30, 2007, he was selected as the Associated Press College Player of the Year, becoming the first freshman and the first athlete from the state of Texas to win the award since its inception in 1961.On April 1, 2007, he became the first freshman to win the Naismith College Player of the Year.On April 7, 2007, received the John Wooden Award.A few weeks later, after entering the Seattle Supersonics through the NBA Draft, Durant's No. 35 jersey from the University of Texas was announced as retired, and now hangs in the Frank Irving Center.
